As mentioned in chapter three, Frank often talks to "The Angel on the seventh step" and he continues to do so throughout the rest of his childhood. Angela is always depressed and Malachy Sr. is always drunk, Frank is the eldest child, and he will get yelled at, hit, or both when he asks a question.

As a result of this,do you think that Frank feels trapped in his own life and uses "The angel on the Seventh step" as someone to talk to or somewhat of an imaginary friend because he feels alone? What are your opinions about "The Angel on the Seventh step"?

  1. Although it isn't mentioned in the book, I do think that Frank feels trapped in his own life, both because if the things mentioned above, and also because hardship follows his family and him wherever he goes. I also think that he feels trapped because every time (so far in this book) something good happens in this book it seems to be taken away from him.

I think that Frank looks forward to speaking to, or venting to the Angel on the seventh step after he's had a bad day after school, or after his father's lost his job because it seems to be his only source to talk to where he wont be judged. He could talk to his brothers, but they are younger, and most of the time don't see what he sees and don't experience what he does. I also think that he's doesn't tell his brothers what he tells the angel because he wants them to portray him as a strong person, and a role model, and if he shows them that he has feeling or fear or others like that he won't be such a good big brother.

  2. yes i think he feels trapped because his father comes home drunk and his mother went out of her way once and went to go look for him with the children and they were starving. She was sending the little one into the bar and asking for him. People were so wasted in there that someone offered a drink to him.
