Discussion Director

Discussion Director; Donna Wylie

Throughout this book Frank and his family deals with struggle, even at the start of the book, it starts out that was in Brooklyn, they are poor, their father is a drunk, and their newborn sister Margaret just died, who brought the family joy, and even caused their father to stop drinking. After she died Angela is depressed and her cousins Delia and Philomena McNamara visit and write a letter to Angela's mother in Limerick asking for money for the family to have a better life in Ireland.

Do you think that the money for the boat fair will be sent? And if it is, do you think the McCourts quality of life improve or become worse? Explain how you think their new life in Limerick might be like.

  1. Donna Wylie:

I am not sure if Angela's mother will send money to Brooklyn, because the letter Angela's cousins wrote was brief and short with a little explanation of the McCourts current situation.

If the money is sent for them to move to Limerick, I don't think that things will become better, if anything worse. I think that since drinking in Ireland is common, their father will only have more opportunities to get drunk, and take money away from his children and wife.

So, I think that adjusting to Limerick life will be an even harder life than living in Brooklyn. Since their father has a northern Ireland accent, I think him and his family will have a hard time being accepted, and will have a hard time finding work. I also think that him being an alcoholic will also eventually ruin their family, and make them forever hungry. I also think that they will be looked down upon during their new Limerick life.

  2. i don't think that the mother will send the money because the same thing that donna said the letter was brief and even if she does it won't make life better for them. Especially that there living in ireland now. The father will get even more drunk than he was before.
